Scientists are still learning about the health effects of being exposed to secondhand e-cigarette aerosol. The FDA monitors the national usage rates for all tobacco products, including an annual youth survey, and has seen a drastic increase in youth use of e-cigarette products in recent years.
That said, there are some concerns about how repeatedly inhaling e-cigarette aerosol over an extended period of time could affect bystanders’ long-term lung function and risk of allergic reactions. "I applaud Governor Cuomo for taking action to prevent exposure to secondhand e-cigarette emissions in public places for all New Yorkers." ALBANY, NY (November 22, 2017) - The New York State Department of Health is reminding all New Yorkers that beginning today the use of electronic cigarettes is banned indoors everywhere that smoking tobacco products are prohibited in New York. The Food and Drug Administration estimates that more than 3.5 million middle and high school students used e-cigarettes in 2018, though sales to minors are prohibited. In 2018, the FDA restricted the sale of flavored e-cigarettes to adult-only venues, with the exception of tobacco, menthol and mint flavors, which can be sold wherever traditional cigarettes are sold.
Last year, 9.4% of individuals ages 12 years and above reported vaping nicotine within the previous month, up from 8.3% in 2022. "This research has provided greater understanding in the court systems nationwide as to the nature of drug usage, abuse, and overdose cases in which electronic cigarettes were used to deliver an illicit drug," the researchers concluded. THC, synthetic cannabinoids, and dextromethorphan, a drug found in some cough medicines, "were identified in e-liquids purportedly containing only CBD to be consumed for ‘health benefits,’" the researchers said. Results from the National Drug Strategy Household Survey do not provide evidence for or against the use of e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool, or as a gateway to tobacco smoking. The age groups most likely to smoke tobacco in 2019 and 2022–2023 were the least likely to use e-cigarettes, and the age groups most likely to use e-cigarettes had low tobacco smoking rates in 2019 and 2022–2023. In 2022–2023, 1 in 5 (19.8%) people aged 14 and over in Australia reported having used e‑cigarettes at least once in their lifetime, with 7% currently using e‑cigarettes at least daily, weekly, monthly, or less often than monthly.

This was a large increase from 2019, when only 11.3% of people had ever used e‑cigarettes, and 2.5% were currently using them (Figure 1). The proportion of people who used e‑cigarettes daily in 2022–2023 was 3.5%, rising from 1.1% in 2019. In smokers who smoke tobacco cigarettes, blood flow increased modestly after cigarette inhalation and then decreased with subsequent stress. However, with those who vaped, blood flow decreased after inhalation at rest and also after handgrip stress. Finally, lung health effects are not expected to be seen for 20 to 30 years.
However, when they looked at other scenarios, such as bar settings where many people were vaping, the researchers found that the concentration of toxins in the air was generally much higher than in residential settings. The more people were vaping and the higher voltages were used, the worse the air quality. In some scenarios, levels of both formaldehyde and acrolein were above OEHHA safety standards for bar employees. This article explains the toxins found in vaping aerosol, the factors affecting secondhand vaping, and potential health effects. When I exhale, the vapor is gone within 10 seconds, along with the smell. Funny how just about 10 years ago people were still allowed to smoke actual cigarettes in some restaurants and I didn’t see anyone walking out on their meal due to the smell coming from the smoking section. I’m not saying it was a wonderful arrangement, but people dealt with it.

Urgent action is needed to control e-cigarettes to protect children, as well as non-smokers and minimize health harms to the population. E-cigarettes as consumer products are not shown to be effective for quitting tobacco use at the population level. Instead, alarming evidence has emerged on adverse population health effects. Without urgent and effective public health action, e-cigarettes will lead to a new generation of nicotine-addicted individuals.
The most consistent predictors have been descriptive norms of parents’ and close friends’ smoking, indicating that addressing close network members might be the most effective in interventions [27]. In our study, parental smoking reported by adolescents increased all types of susceptibility when analysed independently. "From a public health perspective, we have always been concerned about dual-use of both traditional and e-cig products," said study lead author Marisa Bittoni, an oncology researcher at Ohio State University in Columbus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Union are grappling with these issues as they decide how to regulate the products. The researchers studied human endothelial cells generated in the laboratory from what are called induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells. IPS cells can become many different cell types, and they provide an ideal way for researchers to closely study cells that would be difficult to isolate directly from a patient. A.C.—managed the analytical testing programme and co-authored the manuscript.
Here we address some of the common questions people ask about e-cigarettes. ENDS may be manufactured to look like conventional combusted cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. Larger devices, such as tank systems or mods, bear little or no resemblance to cigarettes.
This was especially the case for people aged 14 to 17 (74%) and 18 to 24 (68%). The 2022–2023 NDSHS was conducted before these restrictions were put into place. At the time, in most jurisdictions, it was legal for adults to purchase e‑cigarettes that did not contain nicotine from a broad range of retail settings, including those used to purchase tobacco products. Prior to 2024, adults could also import nicotine e‑cigarettes with a prescription via the personal importation scheme. The first study found that vaping can worsen several heart disease risk factors at levels equal to tobacco cigarettes, while the second found that e-cigarettes decrease blood flow in the heart even more than tobacco cigarettes. However, e-cigarettes still pose health risks, even without nicotine.
Almost 9 in 10 people (86%) supported prohibiting the sale of e‑cigarettes to people under 18 years of age, a substantial increase from 2019 (79%). Social and economic factors shape people’s behaviours of vaping or smoking. Generally, people living in the most disadvantaged socioeconomic areas were the most likely to currently smoke regular cigarettes but not use e‑cigarettes (13.2%). In contrast, people living in the most advantaged socioeconomic areas were the most likely to use e‑cigarettes but not smoke regular cigarettes (6.6%) (Figure 4). Young people aged 18 to 24 were the most likely to have used e‑cigarettes in 2022–2023, with almost 1 in 2 (49%) having used them at least once in their lifetime, and over 1 in 5 (21%) currently using e‑cigarettes in 2022–2023. More information on young people’s use of vapes and e-cigarettes can be found online.
Fortunately, there has been a substantial drop in cases since they peaked in August and September of 2020. What’s more, researchers have also identified vitamin E acetate, a chemical added to some THC-containing vaping products, as the main—but possibly not the only—cause of the illness. The outbreak of EVALI cases emerged against a backdrop of an ongoing vaping epidemic among youth.
Much like free-base nicotine products, these liquids contain propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin, as well as other chemicals such as flavouring ingredients. Most vaping devices use electrical power from a battery to heat a liquid solution. The term "vaping" is also used to refer to the inhalation of cannabis aerosols, which are produced by products that differ from nicotine products described on this page. Propylene glycol and glycerin are the most common solvents used in vapor products. While generally recognized as safe for ingestion by the FDA, research has found both substances to be toxic when aerosolized through the vaping process.
Enrollees in the program receive interactive daily text messages tailored to their sign-up date or their target quit date if they set one. More people began vaping in 2023 than initiated alcohol or illicit substances. A 2015 study suggests that people who vape nicotine are more likely to become dependent on nicotine than people who vape nicotine-free fluids. Vaping might appear to be a less harmful choice for people trying to quit smoking. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t risks involved, even if the vape liquid is nicotine-free. For instance, a 2018 study reported that exposure to e-cigarette aerosol makes teeth surfaces more prone to developing bacteria.
A great example of this is the Riot Connex Pod Kit which uses magnets to attach replaceable cartridge-like flaovured pods to the batter. You can also get refillable pod mod kits, which use pods with built-in coils but require filling with your e-liquid. Jabba, D.V.M., Ph.D., a senior research scientist at Duke University School of Medicine. "Even with the current relatively low use of e-cigarettes among adults – 3.7 percent – health care costs are already substantial, and likely to increase in the future if youth continue to use this product," said Max. "Vaping products containing nicotine are subject to federal laws that prohibit sales to people under the age of 21," said study co-author Sairam V. Jabba, D.V.M., Ph.D., a senior research scientist at Duke University School of Medicine. The 2022–2023 NDSHS had a series of questions regarding policy measures designed to address e‑cigarette use. Support increased for all e‑cigarette policy options among the Australian population (Figure 6).
Where e-cigarette flavor restrictions had been in effect for at least a year, sales of cigarette brands favored by adults went up by 10%, while sales of cigarette brands that disproportionately attract underage smokers saw a 20% bump. During the study period, hundreds of localities and seven states restricted or prohibited flavored e-cigarette sales. While these policies did reduce per-capita vape sales, they also substantially boosted cigarette sales. To date, there is no state excise or special tax placed on e-cigarettes. In vaping liquids, nicotine and/or flavouring ingredients are dissolved in a liquid mixture.
Helping a teen understand what sources to trust can give them a powerful tool to educate themselves. Don’t just tell them that there’s no good reason to start, help them learn why there’s no good reason. Talk about peer pressure, the tricks advertisers use and the importance of health.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that vaping nicotine can permanently affect brain development in people under the age of 25. The researchers concluded that vaping with and without nicotine disrupts typical lung function in otherwise healthy people. The researchers reported a number of adverse effects on both types of cells, including toxicity, oxidation, and inflammation. However, these results aren’t necessarily generalizable to vaping in real life. A 2019 study assessed data from a nationwide survey of nearly 450,000 participants and found no significant association between e-cigarette use and heart disease. The authors also described moderate evidence suggesting that taking a puff from an e-cigarette increases blood pressure.
Little research has been conducted into the safety of e-cigarettes and e-liquids in pregnancy. It is not known whether the vapour is harmful to a baby in pregnancy. E-cigarettes do not produce tar or carbon monoxide, two of the most harmful elements in tobacco smoke.
But if you find using an e-cigarette helpful for quitting and staying smoke-free, it's much safer for you and your baby than continuing to smoke. It's also important to choose the right strength of nicotine in your e-liquid, which will depend on how much you smoke. You can get advice on models and e-liquids from a specialist vape shop. You will not get the full benefit from vaping unless you stop smoking cigarettes completely. E-cigarettes do not burn tobacco and do not produce tar or carbon monoxide, two of the most damaging elements in tobacco smoke. At Yale Medicine, most pediatricians have started asking middle- and high school-age patients about their exposure to vaping, in large part to identify patients who might be at higher risk for developing related problems.
Taken together, the studies provide strong evidence that an interactive, tailored text message program can help teens and their older peers break free from nicotine addiction. These findings are especially important given the recent youth mental health crisis documented by the U.S. Adolescents in this study were characterized by high severity of past-year problems with depression, sleep, anxiety, trauma, and substance use. In addition, moderate to high levels of nicotine dependence were observed across multiple measures, with more than three-quarters (76.2%) of teens vaping within 30 minutes of waking — a common way to measure addiction. Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health brings together dedicated experts from many disciplines to educate new generations of global health leaders and produce powerful ideas that improve the lives and health of people everywhere. At last I can feel like I am a part of society again, and not some evildoer who deserves to be sent out to the village gates to hide my atrocious acts. Siegel is concerned that the use of nicotine salts could make the Juul more addictive. "With Juul, the pattern of use isn’t kids having a cherry vape every now and then," he said. "It’s kids sneaking off to the bathroom, kids vaping consistently throughout the day." Siegel said that he was keeping an eye on this behavior.
Although there’s no definitive answer at this point, experts do have a theory about how vaping harms lungs. Young people who vape may be more likely to become addicted than adults. Nicotine exposure during this vital time can affect brain development in subtle and important ways. Research published in 2017 found that the high temperatures needed to form the mist for vaping can create dozens of toxic chemicals, such as formaldehyde, which is thought to cause cancer.
It may also increase the risk of developing mood disorders and problems with impulse control. They appeared on the U.S. market in 2015 and are now the top-selling brand of e-cigarette in the country. Although secondhand vapor may not affect the lungs the same way as vaping, it is better to avoid it, if possible. E-cigarettes have been strongly linked to continued tobacco use and are not recommended for young people.
"This is the first study to demonstrate the effectiveness of any quit vaping program for adolescents. It’s also a program that has been used by more than 780,000 young people nationwide since Truth Initiative launched it in 2019," Dr. Amanda Graham, chief health officer at Truth Initiative and principal investigator of the study, said in an email. Her team tracked rates of both vaping and smoking among nearly 5,000 Columbus-area people diagnosed with lung cancer, and compared them to a group of almost 27,300 people without cancer. It found that there was not enough evidence to confirm its products did not harm public health. The FDA has banned the sale of flavored nicotine products in the US unless a company has received their expressed approval.
This includes quit coaching, up to 2 weeks of nicotine replacement therapy, and a youth digital program for those ages 13-17. Vuse, owned by Reynolds American, and Juul control about 60% of the market, while hundreds of disposable brands account for the rest. That's why you're better off with these disposable vapes from Tribe Tokes, which are routinely tested by third-party labs to ensure their purity. Most disposable e-cigarettes heat nicotine to around 390 degrees, and the Elf Bar is no exception. Since it's so much hotter than the vapes listed above, it may put more stress on your lungs. Though we're always cautious about recommending nicotine products, it's hard to deny that they're less dangerous than cigarette smoking.
VaporFi fluids use highly pure ingredients, with no diacetyl, vitamin E acetate, or acetyl propionyl. This gives you much more flexibility to switch between different flavors and substances. Again, this isn't necessarily a safety issue, but some users may find it makes for a rougher puff. Some people aren't looking for energy from their vapes — they're more interested in getting a daily dose of vitamins. The LUVV Air VITA supplies vitamins A, B12, C, and D3, helping to make up for some of the most common nutrient deficiencies in the U.S.

At that point, levels of formaldehyde exceeded limits set by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), though other compounds didn’t come close. About a quarter of middle and high school students surveyed in 2017 said they had been around someone vaping at least once in the past 30 days. In 2021, only about 11 percent of high school students and 3 percent of middle school students surveyed said they had tried e-cigarettes. Results from a clinical trial published by JAMA Internal Medicine found that young adults ages who used This is Quitting from Truth had nearly 40% higher odds of quitting compared to a control group.
In fact, the overall evidence points to e-cigarettes actually helping people to give up smoking tobacco. There is no evidence that e-cigarettes are undermining England’s falling smoking rates. Instead the evidence consistently finds that e-cigarettes are another tool for stopping smoking and in my view smokers should try vaping and vapers should stop smoking entirely. E-cigarettes not only pose substantial health risks to youth and young adults, they pose a significant environmental threat (see the Truth Initiative fact sheet on Tobacco and the Environment). Almost half (49.1%) of young people don’t know what to do with used e-cigarette pods and disposable devices. A second brand of e-cigarettes—marketed as Nixotine, Nixodine, Nixamide and Nic-Safe—contained a nicotine analog called nicotinamide, also at levels lower than the labels indicated, and combined with undisclosed amounts of 6-methyl nicotine.
Though not all flavors have yet been scientifically studied, there is a strong chance others may also be harmful. We work with community partners to raise awareness of the harms of e-cigarettes and vaping and flavored tobacco products that attract youth, through the Unhyped and CounterBalance campaigns. We also review and share e-cigarette use data and trends and tailor our education efforts accordingly. Learn more about potential health hazards of secondhand aerosol (a.k.a. vapor) emitted by electronic cigarettes and electronic smoking devices.
Collectively, these devices are known as electronic nicotine delivery systems. E-cigarette use is often referred to as "vaping" and the aerosol created from their use referred to as "vapor." E-cigarettes come in many colors, shapes, and sizes and can look like USB flash drives, pens, highlighters, or toys. The liquid in e-cigarettes is sometimes called e-juice, e-liquid, vape juice, or vape liquid.
I can go for six months at a time without catching a nasty, lingering cough. My clothing doesn’t reek of smoke all of the time and my car actually smells nice. So, though they are far from perfect, I am enjoying the changes that not smoking cigarettes has brought to my life. "Since there is no safe tobacco product, eventual abstinence from all tobacco products is the end goal," says Dr. Hyland, who is senior author on the new work. Adults in the U.S. who used e-cigarettes daily and also smoked combustible cigarettes were more likely to quit smoking than those who smoked but used e-cigarettes less frequently. Justice announced the task force that they say will address the illegal domestic distribution and sale of electronic cigarette smoking machine cigarettes.
Vapor products have many names, including electronic cigarettes vs vape pens nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), JUULs or vape pens. All adults who smoke conventional cigarettes or other combustible (burned) tobacco products should be advised to quit smoking at the earliest opportunity, recognizing that quitting is hard and often takes repeated, dedicated efforts. Individuals can also seek cessation support by calling QUIT-NOW or ACS-2345.
Many people believe electronic cigarettes (also called e-cigarettes or vapes) are a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes. But with a recent report from the U.S. surgeon general calling e-cigarette use "a major public health concern," this may not be the case. The FDA reports an alarming 900% rise in e-cigarette use among high school students from 2011 to 2015 and the number of high school students using them increased 78% in 2018 alone. Vaping doesn’t create second-hand smoke.Breathing in second-hand smoke is a health risk for people who are around cigarette smokers, including vapers. In addition, third-hand smoke on clothes and furniture is smelly and can be dangerous for people with respiratory conditions. Vaping doesn’t produce the same smelly fumes as cigarettes, but the secondhand vapor contains chemicals and compounds that pollute the indoor air.
Silica was commonly the first material to be used as a wick, followed by cotton and ceramic3,13,14,15. Cotton has good wicking properties but is less thermally stable than silica14,16,17, while ceramic is chemically stable and heat-resistant18. The use of microporous ceramic as a wicking material has increased in the past few years14,16,18,19,20. Its application has been reported to improve heating efficiency and reduce charring14,16,18,19,20. Additional research is ongoing to clarify the dangers from vaping, and how vaping damages the lungs and other organs. Long-term human studies, in particular, could bring the risks from e-cigarettes into better focus, Crotty Alexander says.
According to the 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than 2 million teens reported vaping nicotine, and there was an increase in current overall tobacco product use among middle school students (4.5% to 6.6%) and multiple tobacco product use (1.5% to 2.5%). They are not technically categorized as smokeless tobacco, so the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate them as strictly as smoked tobacco products or combustible tobacco. Without long-term data, we cannot be certain if or how reduced exposure will prevent harm to one’s health. In Canada, most of the provinces require smokers to be 19 years of age to purchase cigarettes (except for Quebec and the prairie provinces, where the age is 18). However, the minimum age only concerns the purchase of tobacco, not use. Alberta, however, does have a law which prohibits the possession or use of tobacco products by all persons under 18, punishable by a $100 fine.
E-cigarettes are popular among teens and young adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2019, nearly 28 percent of high-school students and 11 percent of middle-school students reported using e-cigarettes. About 8 percent of young adults ages 18 to 24 reported using e-cigarettes in 2018. In 2019, nearly 28% of high-school students and 11% of middle-school students reported using e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that generate an inhalable aerosol that usually contains nicotine. Minnesota teens are using e-cigarettes and vapes at alarming rates, exposing themselves to the harms of nicotine and risking addiction.
They observed, on average, a 34 percent reduction in the femoral artery’s dilation. These findings suggest that vaping can cause significant changes to the inner lining of blood vessels, said study lead author Alessandra Caporale, PhD, a post-doctoral researcher in the Laboratory for Structural, Physiologic, and Functional Imaging at Penn. In this study, the researchers examined the impact of an e-cigarette that contained propylene glycol and glycerol with tobacco flavoring, but no nicotine, which study participants took 16, three-second puffs from. To evaluate vascular reactivity, researchers constricted the vessels of the study participants’ thigh with a cuff and then measured how quickly the blood flowed after its release. Using a multi-parametric MRI procedure, researchers scanned the femoral artery and vein in the leg before and after each vaping episode to see how vascular function changed.
Guidance exists on best practices on this concept of accountability — known as end-producer responsibility — but isn’t enforced across the industry by any governing body. Substances from inhaled aerosol particles reaching the e-cigarette user’s lungs, blood, and brain. Minnesota’s middle school and high school students who have asthma who vaped or smoked in the past 30 days reported experiencing more frequent symptoms of asthma than students who did not have asthma who had not vaped or smoked.
"One of the real problems [with] these things is that because of the low quality control, you never quite know what you are getting," he says. Those who support minimal regulation contend that limiting the use of e-cigarettes would encourage more people to smoke conventional cigarettes. Wild WestAs scientists struggle to test the safety of e-cigarettes, the devices are becoming more and more popular among teens and preteens. E-cigarette use among U.S. high school students more than doubled from 4.7 percent in 2011 to 10 percent in 2012, according to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Youth Tobacco Survey. At least 160,000 students who had never tried conventional cigarettes puffed on e-cigs.
Screen all patients, encourage them to quit, and refer patients to evidence-based services for help quitting. However, nicotine used in vaping liquids is often sourced and extracted from tobacco plants. More recently, products containing synthetic nicotine, which is created through chemical processes, have been made available in Canada.
E-cigarettes may be disposable, be refillable with e-liquid, or have a prefilled cartridge or pod for reuse. Some e-cigarettes can also be used to deliver cannabis and other drugs. Additionally, high quality epidemiology studies consistently demonstrate that e-cigarettes use increases conventional cigarette uptake, particularly among non-smoking youth, by nearly 3 times. Evidence reveals that these products are harmful to health and are not safe. However, it is too early to provide a clear answer on the long-term impact of using them or being exposed to them.
