There are currently more than 7,000 varieties of flavored e-cigarettes and e-juice (liquid containing nicotine that is used in refillable devices) on the market. Although the popularity and use of e-cigarettes continues to increase, there is a lack of data on their potential health effects. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a proposed rule to include e-cigarettes under its authority to regulate certain tobacco and nicotine-containing products. Fourth-generation ‘pod’ e-cigarette devices have been driven by technological advances in electronic atomization of the e-liquid.

In 2022–2023, 2.3% of people in Australia both smoked regular cigarettes and used e‑cigarettes, an increase from 0.7% in 2016. In the second study, researchers analyzed heart blood flow, a measure of coronary vascular function, of 19 young adult smokers immediately before and after smoking either e-cigarettes or tobacco cigarettes. They examined coronary vascular function by a myocardial contrast echocardiography while participants were at rest and after performing a handgrip exercise to simulate physiologic stress. In the first study, researchers looked at the impact of e-cigarettes on lipids and glucose in the blood. They recruited 476 healthy human participants without cardiovascular disease who were either nonsmokers, e-cigarette-only smokers, smokers of e-cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes and those who smoked tobacco cigarettes only.
E-cigarettes can be used to smoke or "vape" marijuana products, herbs, waxes and oils. In the US, e-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco product among middle- and high-school students. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court took up an e-cigarette case Tuesday, weighing Food and Drug Administration decisions blocking the marketing of sweet flavored products amid a surge in vaping by young people. Despite not authorizing a single synthetic nicotine product, it has allowed these products – including e-cigarettes in kid-friendly flavors – to stay on the market well past the July 13 deadline. There is little research on the safety of vaping in pregnancy, but it's likely to be substantially less harmful for you and your baby than smoking. Unlike cigarettes, vapes do not produce carbon monoxide, which is very harmful to a developing baby in the womb. They also cause other serious illnesses, including lung disease, heart disease and stroke.
Still, many people, including teens and young adults drawn to vaping, may not realize that, Bittoni said. Other popular brands, like Puff Bar, have received warnings from regulators about the sale of flavored devices as well. Following the Golden State, Washington had the second-lowest amount of youth vapers, at eight percent. In the Evergreen state, the legal age to purchase vapes is 21, and there is a ban on all flavored varieties. Last year, Alaska Senate President Gary Stevens, a Republican, introduced Senate Bill 89, aimed at imposing the state's first-ever tax on e-cigarette products. Wyoming had the highest rate of youth vapers, with 30 percent of kids under 18 reporting they had used e-cigarettes in 2023.

The agency has taken a multitude of actions to keep ENDS out of the hands of youth, from policy making to enforcement to education. While e-cigarettes can generally be a lower-risk alternative for adults who smoke cigarettes, the use of e-cigarettes is not risk-free. These products deliver harmful chemicals and contain nicotine, which is highly addictive. Moreover, given the harmful chemicals found in e-cigarettes, further high-quality research on both short- and long-term health outcomes is needed. The longer ENDS and other e-cigarettes are on the market, the more information we know about their impacts on health.
"Vaping products containing nicotine are subject to federal laws that prohibit sales to people under the age of 21," said study co-author Sairam V. Jabba, D.V.M., Ph.D., a senior research scientist at Duke University School of Medicine. Previous studies of such policies have mostly examined local or temporary post-2019 state policies. The Yale study was the first to assess how flavor restrictions across most of the United States influence sales of both vapes and cigarettes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) "The Real Cost" campaign seeks to prevent susceptible youth from trying tobacco or becoming regular users.
E-cigarette waste is potentially a more serious environmental threat than cigarette butts since e-cigarettes introduce plastic, nicotine salts, heavy metals, lead, mercury, and flammable lithium-ion batteries into waterways, soil, and to wildlife. "Nicotine analogs are currently not subject to the FDA process and have not been studied for their health effects," Jabba said. This data brief dives deeper into rural youth tobacco use in Minnesota.
More research is needed to address the potential long-term adverse effects of vaping on vascular health, but he predicts that e-cigarettes are potentially much more hazardous than previously assumed. Earlier this year, for instance, his research group found that acute exposure to e-cigarettes causes vascular inflammation. One in four middle school and high school students in Minnesota had tried e-cigarettes (teens call it vaping or juuling). Half of high school seniors reported having tried e-cigarettes at least once. The growing popularity of e-cigarettes among Minnesota’s youth caused the first rise in overall tobacco use in over two decades.
One in five Minnesota teens (grades 6-12) have asthma, a serious chronic disease that can make it difficult to breathe. E-cigarettes aren't thought of as 100% safe, but most experts think they're less dangerous than cigarettes, says Neal Benowitz, MD, a nicotine researcher at the University of California at San Francisco. Cigarette smoking kills almost half a million people a year in the United States. Most of the harm comes from the thousands of chemicals that are burned and inhaled in the smoke, he explains. E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that can look like a real cigarette or pen.
To inform schools of intervention needs, the susceptibility measure could be utilized in school surveys and relevant student services as a screening tool. Simultaneously, it would support the evaluation of existing policies and programmes and monitoring of potential counter-effects. For example, an earlier study observed that school-based programmes and policies had resulted in higher susceptibility risk at some intervention schools [37]. Effective and non-counter-productive interventions are especially important for products where susceptibility is at a high level, like e-cigarettes. Interventions to reduce susceptibility therefore need to address product regulation and marketing as well as social influence, norms, and perceptions.
They found that kids who used e-cigs were more likely than non-users to smoke cigarettes or other tobacco products over the next year. To study the short-term impacts of vaping, the researchers performed MRI exams on 31 healthy, non-smoking adults before and after vaping a nicotine-free e-cigarette. Comparing the pre- and post-MRI data, the single episode of vaping resulted in reduced blood flow and impaired endothelial function in the large (femoral) artery that supplies blood to the thigh and leg. The endothelium, which lines the inside surface of blood vessels, is essential to proper blood circulation. Once the endothelium is damaged, arteries thicken, and blood flow to the heart and the brain can be cut off, resulting in heart attack or stroke.

However, your risk will still be higher than that of people who have never smoked.
Any product that does not submit an application by this deadline must be removed from the marketplace, which if properly enforced, could lead a significantly smaller marketplace. The main component of e-cigarettes is the e-liquid contained in cartridges or tanks. To create an e-liquid, nicotine is extracted from tobacco and mixed with a base (usually propylene glycol), and may also include flavorings, colorings and other chemicals (such as formaldehyde and acrolein, which can cause irreversible lung damage). The American Lung Association is very concerned that we are at risk of losing another generation to tobacco-caused diseases as the result of e-cigarettes.
According to the 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than 2 million teens reported vaping nicotine, and there was an increase in current overall tobacco product use among middle school students (4.5% to 6.6%) and multiple tobacco product use (1.5% to 2.5%). They are not technically categorized as smokeless tobacco, so the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate them as strictly as smoked tobacco products or combustible tobacco. Without long-term data, we cannot be certain if or how reduced exposure will prevent harm to one’s health. In Canada, most of the provinces require smokers to be 19 years of age to purchase cigarettes (except for Quebec and the prairie provinces, where the age is 18). However, the minimum age only concerns the purchase of tobacco, not use. Alberta, however, does have a law which prohibits the possession or use of tobacco products by all persons under 18, punishable by a $100 fine.
Federal, state, and/or local governments need to set clear standards on environmentally responsible e-cigarette waste disposal and hold the industry accountable for adhering to them. E-cigarette manufacturers introduced a new tobacco product that soared in popularity with little thought on how to responsibly dispose of the resulting tons of e-cigarette waste. The group then performed a statistical analysis to determine group differences in vascular function before and after vaping.
For information about ENDS products that are authorized for marketing in the U.S., view FDA’s "Searchable Tobacco Products Database." These problems can seriously hurt the person using the ENDS product and others around them. Differences between schools exist, but having more students with no nicotine use showed protective associations, while having more students with positive attitudes towards product use in one’s age group increased the susceptibility. The results of the present study suggest that both interventions tailored by educational aspirations and universal school policies are needed to reach youth at high-risk of initiation. The concentration of nicotine in the BB57 emissions relative to BB18 was three times greater and followed the three-fold increase in nicotine strength of the e-liquid. In the cigarette smoke, the measured nicotine concentration of 0.23 ± 0.01 mg puff–1 (Table 1), equivalent to 2.07 ± 0.09 mg cig−1, is in accordance with the Ky1R6F certificate value of 1.9 ± 0.1 mg cig−1 (ISO Intense smoking regime)56.

To truly help tobacco users quit and to strengthen global tobacco control, governments need to scale up policies and interventions that we know work. Tried and tested interventions, such as brief advice from health professionals, national toll-free quit lines and mobile and digital cessation services are recommended. Where economically feasible, governments should also consider promoting nicotine replacement therapies and non-nicotine pharmacotherapies for cessation. E-cigarette emissions typically contain nicotine and other toxic substances that are harmful to both users and non-users who are exposed to the aerosols second-hand.
Read this paper by NCI’s Dr. Ned Sharpless and CRUK’s Dr. Iain Foulkes. Drug forums and e-liquid vendors were monitored by the researchers for e-liquids that "purportedly contained alternative pharmaceuticals." A clue in searching for e-liquids that contain illicit drugs is cost, the scientists said. Most nicotine e-liquids range from $5 to $10, while alternative drug e-liquids go for five to twenty times as much. In comparison to the general population, support for these measures varied greatly among people who currently used e‑cigarettes. The most supported measure was prohibiting the sale of e‑cigarettes to people under 18 years of age (67%), while the least supported measure was banning all additives in e‑cigarettes, to make them less attractive to young people (33%) (Figure 7).

The inhalation of harmful chemicals can cause irreversible lung damage and lung diseases.
Electronic nicotine dispensing systems (ENDS), commonly known as electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes, have been popularly considered a less harmful alternative to conventional cigarette smoking since they first appeared on the market more than a decade ago. Both the electronic devices and the different e-liquids are easily available in shops or online stores. The long-term health effects of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are not fully understood, but the science indicates they are not a safe alternative to smoking. Most are noncombustible which includes a battery, a heating element, and a liquid compartment, usually containing addictive nicotine, that is added to the e-liquid or included in the device. The heating element aerosolizes the liquid for the inhalation of the liquid nicotine or other contents.
The e-liquid is quickly heated and converted to an aerosol that can be inhaled into the lungs. As smoking has declined dramatically in the U.S., vaping has gained tremendous popularity very quickly. A 2018 study reported 20% of high schoolers vaped at least once in the past 30 days. The limitations include self-reporting, lack of class-level data and a measure on school performance, and potential bias in parental education and smoking when reported by students. Further, no causal conclusions can be made from this cross-sectional data. Some adolescents experience first dependence symptoms early [2], which makes prevention of nicotine use essential.

We found that the susceptibility was highest for e-cigarette use, followed by smoking and snus use. S-SM was more common among girls, whereas S-EC and S-SN were more common among boys. In our analysis, levels of carbonyls were considerably reduced relative both to other studies of e-cigarettes and to Ky1R6F cigarette smoke.
Several states have imposed restrictions on the sale of e-cigarettes. There are also restrictions on liquids with flavors that may be more attractive to younger people. The researchers also noted a lack of evidence that vaping is an effective means of quitting smoking. The marketing of e-cigarettes and their range of flavors can give the impression that vaping is not harmful.

E-cigarettes can contain other harmful substances, including cancer-causing chemicals; chemicals linked to serious lung disease; and heavy metals, such as nickel, tin, and lead. Young people who use e-cigarettes may be more likely to smoke traditional cigarettes in the future. Vapor products produce aerosol by heating a liquid solution, which is inhaled as an aerosol. The process is referred to as "vaping." Vapor products often contain nicotine.
The availability of "vape wear," such as backpacks and hoodies, also allow the user to vape while concealing the product. The study showed that the e-liquids of certain cig-a-like brands contain high levels of nickel and chromium, which may come from the nichrome heating coils of the vaporizing device. It also shuts down in response to a short circuit so that wiring or battery issues won't cause it to ignite. And its reverse polarity protection keeps the device from being damaged if the battery is improperly installed (though this shouldn't be an issue since it's a pre-assembled vape). We appreciate the elegant design of the SKE Crystal Bar, and it's got a reputation for delivering rich, long-lasting flavor.
Using e-cigarettes, or "vaping," are terms used synonymously to refer to the use of a wide variety of electronic, battery-operated devices that aerosolize, but do not burn, liquids to release nicotine and other substances. Nicotine-containing e-cigarettes are regulated as "tobacco products" by the FDA because the nicotine is derived from the tobacco plant. E-cigarettes pose a threat to the health of users and the harms are becoming increasingly apparent. In the past few years, the use of these products has increased at an alarming rate among young people in significant part because the newest, re-engineered generation of e-cigarettes more effectively delivers large amounts of nicotine to the brain.

E-cigarettes are known by many different names, including "vapes," "e-cigs," "puff bars," and "electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS)." E-cigarettes are devices which produce an aerosol by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine—the addictive drug in regular cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products—flavorings, and other chemicals that help to make the aerosol.
