Additionally, when e-cigarette device owners were asked about e-cigarette waste disposal, the majority (73.7%) believed that it was difficult to find e-cigarette drop off sites. Principal investigator Wendy Max, PhD, director of the Institute for Health & Aging, noted that from 2013 to 2018, e-cigarette use among high school students soared from 4.5% to 20.8%. Replacing your cigarette with a cigar, pipe, e-cigarette, or hookah won’t help you avoid the health risks. The U.S. government has taken steps to restrict most flavored vaping products, effective in 2020. While this should reduce the number of flavored cartridges available in the United States, the guidelines are limited to products submitted for market authorization and don’t include those made at home or purchased online from other countries. Other studies suggest that while using e-cigarettes sends pollutants into the air, the concentration of these toxins drops quickly after someone stops vaping (much faster than cigarette smoke), but that doesn’t mean that the risk has gone away. Some, for example, will settle on surfaces, such as carpets or furniture, where small children might touch them or inadvertently ingest them when placing contaminated objects in their mouths.
Nicotine levels ranged 0.10–0.32 mg puff−1 across the 3 study products. The prognosis depends on how much nicotine was taken and how quickly treatment was started. If a person is able to survive during the first four hours after poisoning, they’re usually likely to recover. If a person has been severely affected, they may have ongoing seizures or respiratory failure or other problems because of the damage done from low oxygen levels during the nicotine overdose event. Increased levels of nicotine or cotinine (nicotine metabolite) can be detected in urine or blood. Nicotine poisoning or overdose can also result from taking more than the recommended amount of nicotine replacement products (for example, chewing too much gum or dissolving lozenges) or taking too high of a dose of patches, inhalers or nasal sprays.

The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine concluded there is "substantial evidence" that if a youth or young adult uses an e-cigarette, they are at increased risk of using traditional cigarettes.
They may resemble traditional tobacco products like cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or other common gadgets like pens, flashlights, USB flash drives, fidget spinners, gaming controls, car key fobs, smart watches and even asthma inhalers. Food and Drug Administration has issued warnings to several companies for marketing 15 different e-cigarette products packaged to look like toys, food or cartoon characters that were likely to promote use among adolescents. E-cigarette, battery-operated device modeled after regular cigarettes. The e-cigarette was invented in 2003 by Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik, who initially developed the device to serve as an alternative to conventional smoking.
Among adolescents who both vaped and smoked traditional cigarettes, a higher proportion in the This is Quitting program, about 51%, reported not vaping nor smoking at seven months, compared with 30% of the assessment-only group. Withdrawal from tobacco products can cause temporary congestion and respiratory discomfort as your lungs and airways begin to heal. Increased mucus production right after quitting smoking may be a positive sign that your respiratory system is recovering. What might be considered safe for the average workplace employee could still pose serious health risks for more medically vulnerable populations.
According to Blaha, there are three reasons e-cigarettes may be particularly enticing to young people. Second, e-cigarettes have a lower per-use cost than traditional cigarettes. State and local authorities can restrict the sale of flavored tobacco products, including e-cigarettes.
Separate studies have shown that newer e-cigarettes may deliver higher doses of nicotine more efficiently, which could explain the recent findings. The investigators acknowledged that more frequent use of e-cigarettes may also reflect greater determination to quit smoking combustible cigarettes. They noted that their study did not evaluate the risks of youth e-cigarette use. E-cigarettes are the most commonly used commercial tobacco product among youth,1 so it is critical that public health officials and the general public understand the potential risks of using them.
This is why it took as long as it did for the negative health effects of cigarettes to be widely recognized. There is abundant evidence that e-cigarettes can help some individuals to quit smoking, so they should be more widely recommended as smoking cessation aids. Vaping and smoking share similar negative effects on the body, such as damage to the lungs and increased cancer risk.
According to the CDC, 15% of EVALI patients were less than 18 years old. In addition, e-cigarettes and e-cigarette vapor may contain the chemicals or substances listed below. E-cigarettes are known by many different names, and sometimes people find it hard to understand what is really known about these devices.
Susceptibility to smoking or non-combustible nicotine use is also influenced by national tobacco control policies. In Europe, Finland has been among the countries with most advanced tobacco control regulations [31]. Still, there is a large difference in smoking and snus use between students in academically and non-academically oriented education [7]. For snus, Finland follows the EU-wide sales ban but cross-border traveller imports from Sweden are permitted and an illicit market exists [32]. For e-cigarettes, comprehensive regulations were introduced in 2016 including retail sale licensing and ban for distance sales, display and advertising at point-of-sale, other flavours than tobacco and use of e-cigarettes in smoke-free places [33].
We constantly monitor the latest topics and trends in commercial tobacco and substance use. The association between student- and school-level factors and susceptibility to smoking. Nationally, e-cigarette use among high school students doubled from 11.7% in 2017 to 27.5% in 2019. The researchers studied human endothelial cells generated in the laboratory from what are called induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells. IPS cells can become many different cell types, and they provide an ideal way for researchers to closely study cells that would be difficult to isolate directly from a patient. A.C.—managed the analytical testing programme and co-authored the manuscript.
The sales data came from ordinary brick-and-mortar establishments like gas stations, groceries, and convenience stores. Statistical analyses took into account a host of other factors that may affect tobacco product sales, such as concurrent restrictions on flavored cigar and menthol cigarette sales, tax rates, cannabis availability, and unemployment rates. We are also proud to announce a new cessation service from Quitline Iowa - My Life My Quit - a program designed especially for youth between 12 and 17 years of age to quit using tobacco and vape products.
They are sometimes called e-cigs, e-hookahs, mods, vape pens, vapes, and tank systems. Using an e-cigarette is often called "vaping" or "JUULing." 2Most e-cigarette users do not consider themselves to be smokers. E-cigarettes, vapes, vape or hookah pens, e-pipes, and other vaping products are battery-powered devices that allow users to inhale, or vape, aerosolized liquid (e-juice).
This can also increase the levels of other toxicants to the user and also expose bystanders to harmful emissions. Vapes, vaporizers, vape pens, hookah pens, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or e-cigs), e-cigars, and e-pipes are some of the many tobacco product terms used to describe electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). An electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) is a device that heats up the liquid nicotine and flavoring for you to breathe in. There are many varieties of e-cigarettes that go by different names, including vapes, vape pens or sticks, e-hookahs, hookah sticks, mods and personal vaporizers (PVs). They can also be collectively called electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).
Rates of e-cigarette use among Cumberland students aren’t available, but across North Carolina, 21.4% of high school respondents to the state’s 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey said they currently vaped. The state’s rates are significantly higher than the national rates of 10% for high schoolers and 4.6% of middle schoolers, according to the National Youth Tobacco Survey. The combo could raise your odds for lung cancer even higher, new research warns. But now that I’ve gotten rid of the endless, all-day vaping, and a nicotine hit makes me stink like a dive bar ashtray, makes my mouth taste like dirt, and makes my friends recoil from my presence, I’ve got reasons to cut back.
All this evidence would suggest that e-cigarettes are potentially less harmful than conventional cigarettes (Fig. 2) [11, 14, 22, 24, 27,28,29]. Importantly, however, most of these studies have investigated only short-term effects [10, 14, 15, 22, 27,28,29, 31, 32], and the long-term effects of e-cigarette consumption on human health are still unclear and require further study. Vapes come in colorful, fun, and unique product designs, along with many flavors, all of which come together as part of the attraction for youth who believe that these products are not addictive and are safe to use. Many users believe vaping will reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
Others can be refilled with liquid, recharged, and used over and over. Our Board of Health is a leader in protecting people from the dangers of e-cigarettes and vapor products. Vapes contain nicotine and other substances like THC that negatively affect brain development in youth. Nicotine is also highly addictive and can lead to smoking later in life. Vapes are electronic devices designed to deliver vapourised liquids into your lungs when you breathe in.
If you are not sure whether disposables are for you, these kits would be a great place to start. The leading disposable vape kits are Elf Bars, Lost Mary and Crystal Bar. Both come in a wide range of tastes to suit anyone looking to switch from smoking but also work well as a cheap back up kit for existing vapers. The Perelman School of Medicine is consistently among the nation's top recipients of funding from the National Institutes of Health, with $550 million awarded in the 2022 fiscal year. Data from the 2019 Minnesota Student Survey shows a steep rise in e-cigarette use among students. This study was supported by funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the NIH and the FDA Center for Tobacco Products.
A Yale study in 2019 found that, among students at three Connecticut public schools, those who used e-cigarettes were more likely to smoke regular cigarettes in the future. Most e-cigarettes have a battery, a heating element, and place to hold a liquid (such as a cartridge or pod). The e-liquid usually contains nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals. As the user draws on the device, the battery heats the e-liquid to produce aerosol (not water vapor).
However, the leading causes of nicotine poisoning are smokeless tobacco products (chew and snuff) and liquid nicotine that’s used in e-cigarettes. Chewing and snorting tobacco releases more nicotine into the body than smoking. E-cigarettes are not completely risk free but when compared to smoking, evidence shows they carry just a fraction of the harm. The problem is people increasingly think they are at least as harmful and this may be keeping millions of smokers from quitting. Local stop smoking services should look to support e-cigarette users in their journey to quitting completely.

If you think this is why your child vapes, talk to them about healthier ways to stay at a healthy weight or lose weight. Start by asking your child in a nonjudgmental, concerned way if they have tried vaping. Even if you don’t think your kids vape, talk about it with them anyway so they know it’s unhealthy. Kids being stuck at home under their parents’ supervision during the COVID-19 pandemic could contribute to that trend. Although there is no federal excise tax on e-cigarettes, states have the authority to tax e-cigarettes. Thirty-two states, the District of Columbia, and two territories have imposed a tax on e-cigarettes as of June 15, 2023. Open-system vapes also often allow you to modify things like temperature and airflow. Another potential risk posed by vaping indoors is allergic reactions, especially among children. According to research, roughly 8% of kids in the United States have food allergies. Nuts (a common food allergy) are sometimes used to make added flavors in vaping fluids.
In general, e-cigarettes are not safe for young people or people who are pregnant. Vaping is no safer for developing fetuses than smoking traditional cigarettes. They may also resemble sleek electronic devices, making them appealing to younger users.
In Cumberland County, Chalmers McClain and Graham said the growing number of vape shops opening near schools with their colorful and bright lights to attract students is also part of the problem. For example, Ramsey Street Alternative High School has two vape shops within a six-minute walk from the school. Teacher concerns around increasing the suspension rates of students caught vaping on school property prompted the initial pilot and current implementation of CATCH My Breath into county schools, said Graham.
